"NEW UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER POLICY RESEARCH PROGRAM ESTABLISHED"

The Office of Research of the University of California has approved the establishment of the UC Asian American and Pacific Islander Policy Multi-Campus Research Program (UC AAPI Policy MRP), which will officially start operating July 1, 2007. The MRP will support and promote applied research on policy issues related to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in California and the nation. The MRP currently has 50 faculty affiliates from all 10 campuses, representing a diverse range of disciplines, including political science, sociology, economics, ethnic studies, law, public health, nursing, urban planning, education, Asian
American Studies, ethnic studies and social welfare.

The UC AAPI Policy MRP will bring together UC researchers, community-based organizations and legislators to identify, implement and disseminate research related to the AAPI community. The MRP will provide support and training to faculty and their students to conduct policy research, and will sponsor forums for them to present findings to elected officials, policy makers, community leaders and the general public. In doing so, it will enhance the University's broader mission of integrating research, teaching, and community service in ways that enlighten public policy.

The University of California Office of the President will provide funds for core operations for three years. The MRP will be housed at UCLA's Asian American Studies Center, which will provide matching funds and administrative support. UCLA's Graduate Division within the Chancellorís Office and UCLA's Asian American Studies Department will provide additional support. The Berkeley, Davis, and Irvine campuses will provide matching funds and will sponsor and host annual conferences and workshops to further the MRP's goals.

The founding of the MRP was made possible through the active involvement of faculty from throughout the UC system, with support from the UC Office of the President, California Policy Research Center, UCLA Asian American Studies Center, the UC Center at Sacramento, and the Joint API Legislative Caucus.

Professor Paul Ong (Asian American Studies and School of Public Affairs) will serve as the MRP's faculty director.

Graduate Writing Fellows resource

UWP Introduces: Graduate Writing Fellows

All graduate students at UC Davis are invited to schedule an appointment with a peer-writing fellow, a graduate student who is trained to coach writing projects across the disciplines. Students are encouraged to make 30-minute to one-hour appointments at any stage of the writing process. Bring questions, doodles, or drafts.

At the beginning of the session, your fellow will ask questions about what you're working on so that the session will be driven by your goals and concerns.

You can work will your fellow on generating and focusing a topic, organizing and clarifying ideas, enhancing persuasiveness, adapting your style for a specific audience or publication, and overall strengthening
your writing skills. Your writing fellow will not edit your work for grammatical errors, but will help you to improve your writing style.

Suchang Chan donates her collection to U. Minnesota

ANNOUNCING THE SUCHENG CHAN ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES COLLECTION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

Historian and pioneering scholar Sucheng Chan is donating her formidable collection of Asian American Studies-related books and research materials to the Immigration History Research Center at the University of Minnesota. Prof. Chan is author or editor of more than fourteen books, including Asian Americans, Hmong Means Free, Quiet Odyssey: A Pioneer Korean Woman in America, Entry Denied: Exclusion and the Chinese Community in America, and
Survivors: Cambodian Refugees in the United States.

Prof. Chan will be visiting the University of Minnesota to give a public lecture titled, "Why Asian American Studies Matters," Thursday, April 26, 2007 from 5-7pm. A reception will follow.

UCLA AASC: Latest Census Reports on Asian Americans, Black Americans, and Hispanic Americans

The UCLA Asian American Studies Center, as an official U.S. Census Information Center in partnership with the National Coalition for Asian Pacific Community Development, is pleased to assist the U.S. Census Bureau in announcing the release on February 15 of three informative reports on Asian Americans, Black Americans, and Hispanic Americans based on the 2004 American Community Survey. Each report can be downloaded.

The American Community: 2004 -- Feb. 15 -- These three reports present a portrait of racial and ethnic population groups in the United States based on data from the 2004 American Community Survey. Each report provides information on a number of characteristics (e.g., education, household type, income, commuting, etc.). Data are presented in tables, figures, and maps. In addition, the Asian and Hispanic reports present data for selected detailed groups (Asian Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese for Asians; Guatemalans, Hondurans, Salvadorans, Colombians, Ecuadorians, and Peruvians for Hispanics). Two additional reports on the Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander population and the American Indian and Alaska Native population will be released later this year.

Vietnamese Advanced Summer Institute

VIETNAMESE ADVANCED SUMMER INSTITUTE

The Vietnamese Advanced Summer Institute is funded by a grant from 
the US Department of Education. It is an intensive eight-week course 
of study in advanced Vietnamese to be conducted in Viet Nam with 
instruction provided by the Hanoi Vietnamese Language Center, under 
the auspices of the Hanoi University of Foreign Studies, and the 
Saigon Vietnamese Language School, under the aegis of the Viet Nam 
National Ministry of Education & Training.

Equivalent to a full year's academic work and providing benefits far 
beyond increased foreign-language proficiency, this overseas program 
will be offered to approximately 12 individuals selected nationally. 
Candidates are chosen on the basis of their need for and ability to 
absorb advanced training in Vietnamese, their readiness to benefit 
from in-country experiences, and their commitment and potential to 
become the next generation of Vietnamese language and area-studies 
scholars in the U.S. The communicative/interactive teaching approach, 
using authentic materials and carried out by experienced instructors, 
is enhanced by field trips to many famous sites across Viet Nam.

Advancement of Vietnamese Abroad (GUAVA). The member institutions are

Postcolonial Studies research cluster

Dear Colleagues:

It gives us great pleasure to announce the formation of a new
research cluster, Traveling Debates in Postcolonial Studies, co-funded by
the Center for History, Society and Culture (CHSC) and the Davis
Humanities Institute (DHI).

The cluster will host its first organizational meeting on
Tuesday, January 30, from 12-1:30 p.m. in 126 Voorhies.  Light
refreshments will be served. All interested graduate students and faculty
from across the disciplines are welcome!

The Traveling Debates in Postcolonial Studies research cluster is
an interdisciplinary, graduate student-centered forum at the University
of California, Davis, dedicated to advancing research in contemporary
debates in postcolonial studies and ‘beyond.’ The primary objective is to
further the research and writing of advanced graduate students working
within debates in postcolonial studies through collaboration with faculty
and graduate peers.  In pursuing this objective, the cluster seeks to
organize writing workshops for advanced graduate students; to facilitate
student/faculty reading groups based on current literature and in
coordination with noteworthy academic conferences in and around
postcolonial studies; to share research interests with faculty from
multiple disciplines within campuses throughout the UC system; and to
invite and coordinate speakers in debates around postcolonial studies.

   We are pleased to report that Professor Parama Roy, our new
senior postcolonialist in English, will serve as the faculty sponsor for
the cluster, in coordination with ten other faculty affiliates from
Cultural Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, Anthropology, English,
French, and Comparative Literature.

The agenda for the first meeting on Jan. 23 will include:

• Announcement of the reading group and first reading selection
• Discussion of future reading topics and selections
• Announcement of and discussion about writing workshop procedures
• Solicitation of volunteers for writing workshop submissions
• Announcement of invited speakers and discussion
